Where Families Look First When Searching for a School

Engaged Right-Fit Families

Every family’s enrollment journey starts with a question. Before they schedule a tour, compare tuition, or submit an inquiry, they’re simply trying to understand their options.

“What schools are even out there?”

They ask friends for recommendations. They scroll social media. They search Google. Increasingly, they turn to AI for answers.

You don’t have to be everywhere online. (Whew!). You just need to understand where families look during each stage of their search and make sure your school shows up when they’re looking. Because if your school doesn’t appear during that discovery process, families can’t choose you … no matter how strong your academics, community, or mission may be.

Show Up Where Families Are

Families don’t always begin their school search by opening Google. Sometimes they discover a school while scrolling social media. Other times, it’s because a friend shares an event, celebrates a student accomplishment, or recommends a school they love.

Think of it this way: you weren’t looking for a preschool. Then you drove past one with a sign out front, and suddenly you were curious. Social media works much the same way. It introduces families to schools they may not have considered before.

Your social media presence should therefore do more than share announcements. It’s a way to export your school’s culture, and give families a glimpse at what it would be like to be part of your community. Use it to celebrate traditions, and highlight classroom learning. Share student experiences, faculty stories, and the everyday moments that make your school unique.

Show Up When They’re Looking

At some point, curiosity turns into action. A parent who has thought about school options for their child opens Google and starts searching.

Private school near me.
Christian school in Hillsdale.
Best elementary school near me.

Unlike social media, these families are actively looking for a school. They’re discovering what’s out there, but also deciding which schools are worth exploring. If your school doesn’t appear when families are searching, they’ll likely move on to the schools that do.

Show Up for What’s Next

For years, Google was the first place parents went to ask questions online. (And hey — didn’t we just talk about how this is still an important place to be visible?). Increasingly, parents are turning to AI tools to ask those same questions, but in a more conversational way.

“Compare these two schools.”
“What questions should I ask on a campus tour?”

You don’t need to become an AI expert overnight. But as these tools continue to shape how families discover and evaluate schools, it’s worth paying attention to how your school appears, and whether the information being shared is accurate.
